Never mind that Jefferson High had a 1-25 record the past four years in the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division.

With an infusion of talent and a new coach, Jefferson appears to be the team to beat in the PAL's newly formed Lake Division.

Seasoned El Camino wants its shot, and rivals Capuchino and Mills can run with the Lake's best. Sequoia and Hillsdale are wild cards with new coaches.

Jefferson

  • COACH: Ako Poti, first season
  • 2008 RECORD: 2-8, 0-5 PAL Ocean B

  • TOP RETURNEES: OLB/FB Jonathon Sylvestor, Sr.; FB/DE Abdullah Jose, Sr.; WR/S Gabe Gutierrez, Sr.; G/DT Steven Samera, Sr.; TE/DE Jerry Hurtado, Sr.; LT/DE Sean McNabb, Sr.; WR Bernard Beberry, Jr.

  • TOP NEWCOMERS: QB/FS Ezekiel Nunu, Jr.; WR/CB Kyani Harris, Jr.; DE/QB Cheyenne Meafua, Jr.; MLB Simi Kofe, Jr.; RT/DT Lofi Tamasese, So.; RB Asante Williams, Jr.

  • KEY LOSSES: DE/WR Robert Fleischer, RB/CB Troy Barnes, C/DE Orlando Baltazar, QB/S John Paul Ortega

  • OUTLOOK: Fleet QB Nunu and capable junior receivers will be utilized with some spread offense. Jose and Williams, another skilled underclassman, will share the carries when Jefferson switches to a power-I set. Tamasese, a 6-2, 320-pound sophomore, is a key cog on both lines. The DL has toughness in the middle and quickness on the edge with Meafua, who will also play Wildcat QB.
